Supervisor Training Course

Course Overview

This course is for supervisors in Ontario, Canada. Under section 8(5) of the OHSA, it is required that appointed supervisors be competent. Properly training supervisors is part of meeting this requirement. Comprised of 5 modules, Supervisor Awareness offers a perspective on the competencies that supervisors require to achieve superior workplace management.

Superior workplace management results in greater health and safety within the operation and a better understanding of social responsibility in the workplace. The Supervisor training program outlines the activities, knowledge, and skills that are expected to enhance a supervisor’s performance.

Course Objectives:

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a supervisor

  • Apply basic supervisory skills in communication, delegation, and performance management

  • Foster a productive and respectful work environment

  • Handle common workplace challenges and conflicts effectively

Module 1: Introduction to Supervision

  • What is supervision?

  • The role of a supervisor vs. manager

  • Core responsibilities of a supervisor

  • The transition from team member to supervisor

Module 2: Essential Supervisory Skills

  • Communication: active listening, giving clear instructions

  • Time management and organization

  • Decision-making and problem-solving

  • Delegation: how, when, and to whom

Module 3: Leadership and Motivation

  • Leadership styles and their impact

  • Motivating individuals and teams

  • Setting a positive example

  • Building trust and credibility

Module 4: Team Management

  • Team dynamics and stages of team development

  • Building cohesive teams

  • Managing diversity and inclusion

  • Conducting effective meetings

Module 5: Performance Management

  • Setting goals and expectations (SMART goals)

  • Monitoring performance and providing feedback

  • Coaching and mentoring

  • Conducting performance evaluations

Module 6: Conflict Resolution and Discipline

  • Identifying causes of conflict

  • Strategies to resolve workplace conflict

  • When and how to use disciplinary action

  • Documenting incidents properly

Module 7: Legal and Ethical Responsibilities

  • Understanding basic labor laws and company policies

  • Preventing harassment and discrimination

  • Understanding and Utilizing the Green Book
  • Confidentiality and professionalism

  • Ethical decision-making

Module 8: Practical Application & Wrap-Up

  • Developing a personal action plan
